As a non-union employee, do I have to tell my manager that I have decided to not cross a picket line?

Yes.  UBC’s Policy #64 (http://universitycounsel.ubc.ca/policies/policy64.pdf)  states:  “A Non-Striking Employee who intends not to cross a picket line during a labour dispute should inform his or her Department Head or Supervisor as soon as possible, normally w ithin 48 hours after a union provides strike notice to the University.”

Please note that if you do decide to not cross picket lines to report to work, you will not be paid.
